Categories are used to structure your shop’s offerings – both for visitors in the shop and for better organization in the administration area. They function as folders that can contain products or another level of categories.
Overview
- Status: This setting determines whether the category is visible online.
- ID: This ID allows you to create direct links to a category.
- Actions: Here, you can edit, copy, cut, or delete categories.
- Languages: The category will be displayed in the shop in the listed languages. If your shop is multilingual but the category is not available in all desired languages, you can edit it. Click on the edit window, select the flag tab, and then check the desired languages in the "General Settings" tab.
- Order: This determines the display order of categories online.
Adding Categories
There are two ways to create a new category: manually or by copying the "Template Category" (available in newer systems). A category that contains products should not be copied, as this would also duplicate all its contents.
Creating a Category Using a Template
In newer systems, an empty category is available as a template for new categories:
- Open the menu item Products and Categories
- Click the Copy Icon next to the category "TEMPLATE CATEGORY"
- A pop-up window will open. Ensure the copy method is set to Duplicate. You can also insert the category into another location (inside an existing category).
- Click Copy
- Click the Edit Icon next to the new category "Copy_TEMPLATE CATEGORY"
- Adjust the category name, descriptions, and photos. All other settings have already been applied.
- If necessary, activate the category (toggle "Status") for online sales.
Creating a Category Without a Template
If there is no "Template Category" available, you can manually create categories. Click "New Category," configure all settings similar to an existing category, and check the result in the online shop.
Tips & Special Functions
Skipping the Intermediate Page
A category can be set to directly link to the first product inside it. This is useful when a category contains only one product. For example, a dedicated category may exist for "Value Voucher," but clicking on this category should lead users directly to the product rather than an intermediate overview. This is enabled through the setting "Link directly to first product."
Hidden Categories
If you are preparing a new section of your shop and want to preview it without making it publicly available, you can create a hidden category (toggle "Status" column: off). Inside this hidden category, create a new visible category (toggle "Status" column: on). This category will not be accessible to users, but you can view it using a direct link with the category ID.
Hidden Products
If you want to hide a product from the online shop but keep it accessible via a direct link, you can create a hidden category (toggle "Status" column: off). Move the product you wish to hide into this hidden category. The product will not be visible to users but can still be accessed via a direct link using the product ID.
